While connecting to an Environment using the Plugin Registration TooI, I encountered an error: The authentication type must be specified error.

Following step fixed my issue.

• On the machine where you are using the Plugin Registration Tool, navigate to C:\Users\{current-user_name}\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\PluginRegistration
• Delete all the files in this directory (the files will appear as shown below).

• Close and reopen the Plugin Registration Tool, then try connecting again.
